Dori Smith on Lamont’s victory
August 10th, 2006 . by TomFrom Dori:
As Ned Lamont approached the mike for his victory speech last night I found myself thinking of Iraq. It would have been going on six in the morning there, daylight on another day of excruciating violence.
As blue and white balloons filled the room I wondered if there would be any joy in Baghdad over the news that Ned Lamont had beaten Joe Lieberman. There is infrequent electricity so it is not likely that Iraqis are aware of politics in my state.
At least one U.S. soldier had perished in Iraq as I listened to Connecticut voters at the polls. And there were more scenes of Baghdad and other Iraqi cities on fire.
Is it morning in America? Does that mean we will see an end to the occupation of Iraq and the violence there? Is Democracy being restored and will the re-enfranchized voters in Connecticut be able to share their message with voters across the country?
There are many questions. And at the moment the networks are giving Joe Lieberman the opportunity to answer them. At least for now. He told CNN’s Solidad O’Brien that Ned Lamont had not been given a mandate to rival the one he had been given as a Senator. He said he would fight on regardless of what the state leadership in his own party had to say about the matter because he knows he can “do a better job” than Ned Lamont can.
Maybe someone should offer Joe Lieberman a lesson in Democracy 101. In a Democracy an election means something. We hoped it might in Iraq. We have to demand that it does in America.
