Sleight of hand
July 25th, 2006 . by TomSo, now the mainstream news is all abuzz because Arlen Specter is supposedly going to “challenge” Bush’s use of signing statements.
Yes, well lovely idea except that his previously announced new Senate bill that will give Congressional stamp of approval to the Bush doctrine of the unitary executive which presumes unlimited executive power for the President pretty much makes any “challenge” to the use of signing statements irrelevant because the bill basically eliminates the need for them anyway by admitting Bush can do whatever he wants regardless of Congress.
So the White House and Specter will get to do their little manly election year political dance wherein the administration allows its Congressional puppydogs to pretend they can be off their leash as long as they agree to stay inside the Congressional dog run the President is having built right next to the Free Speech Zone cages where the First Amendment will be similarly confined.
Oh goody, and with the every-so-compliant media dutifully reporting the Specter cave-in bill as a “compromise” by Bush they may get lucky and no one will notice that Specter and his Republican dog pack have pissed on the Constitution on command from the White House.
America was a nice nation while it lasted. I wonder what exactly they are planning in its place?
