World of Wars
June 29th, 2005 . by TomI just read through this NYTimes review of Spielberg’s new version of the H.G. Wells’ classic “War of the Worlds”. It is an interesting review and tends to sum up my sense of today’s moviemaking, i.e. good enough with special effects covering up for inadequate scripts and acting. But it wasn’t the review itself that really caught my eye, it was the line at the end concerning the film’s rating.
[emphasis mine]
“War of the Worlds” is rated PG-13. Much of the earth’s population is wiped out, leaving very little time for sex or bad language.
Sounds like a neocon paradise doesn’t it? The juxtaposition of the radright crusades against sex and bad language (when engaged in by anyone who isn’t a proper Republican) with the radright embrace of almost total war (the “generational conflict” Rummy et al keep referring to) really does highlight their misplaced morality.
It is OK to destroy much of the world as long as we do it for the right reasons but let’s keep those brass tits at the Justice Department covered up.
