Don’t forget Ohio

June 22nd, 2005 . by Tom

For anyone who thinks the election of 2004 is merely interesting history I point you to this website, where they are covering the Ohio scandal known as “Coingate”. [editorial aside: we could do the known universe a huge favor by retiring "gate" as a suffix once and for all]

For those of you who haven’t heard of it, apparently the Republicans in Ohio invested a large sum of state money in rare coins, many of which then turned out to be missing from the “investment”. What’s next, baseball cards?

That blog also covers the ongoing mess that is the Ohio electoral process from 2004. The blog notes here that as many as 25% of the voters were either unable to vote or had serious problems doing so on election day.

None of this is going away and it may be good that it isn’t getting the mainstream press coverage yet. Those folks tend not to stick their necks out investigating things until someone else does the legwork, then they can be all over it claiming it as a “breaking story”. But until they do the lack of attention on this and other issues (even Iraq invasion opposition) will likely help those issues when they do get on to the public radar screen in a real way.

I’ve said all along that while it may be easy to ignore those of us who have been pissed about this stuff from the beginning the people you really have to worry about are the ones that take longer to “get it”. The people who get pissed off last get pissed off the most.
